Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. When she was a young girl, DuVernay's aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt worked as an overnight nurse in order to give her an opportunity to study and literature, or even theater. DuVernay quickly was captivated when she showed her that 1959 West Side Story film.
